Web Page Background

Do you want a web page background
That's more than a plain colour or image ?

A web page background doesn't have to be just a web safe plain color or a repeating image. It is also possible to create professional looking web page background effects that involve some form of Animated Background.

A good source for quality animation and backgrounds I found recently has over 400,000 to choose from.

Before getting into special effects, a recap of the more basic web page background creation is probably a good idea.

Static backgrounds are widely used particularly on business and eCommerce sites where special effects are viewed as being a distraction and more suited to a personal site.

A web page background as a plain color can be created using the <body bgcolor="#0000CC"> statement. This example of code inserted as part of the web page body statement would produce a blue web page background.

The 0000CC is the hexadecimal representation of this web safe shade of blue. The similar statement bgcolor="blue" can also be used as can red, green etc, but these produce a limited range of fixed colors.

For this type of web page background it is far better to use the hexadecimal code.

Web page backgroundA web page background that displays either side of the main web page can also be easily created using the html code <body background="image">

The "image" can be either a jpg or gif image and is usually about 100 x 100 to 150 x 150 pixels square and produces a tiled image effect.

An animated web page background can be created by using an animated gif for the image file in the above.

Care must however be taken with the gif chosen otherwise the effect can be extremely distracting for a visitor.

A variation is the fixed web page background. In the above example when the page is scrolled, the web page background will also scroll.

This can be prevented using the background properties statement: <body background="image" bgproperties="fixed"> The fixed web page background effect only works with Internet Explorer.

Different special effects can be applied to a web page background image using DHTML filters, which like the above, only work in IE 4 and later versions.

The effects available range from blur, glow, flipping, x-ray, shadow effects creating some 17 different effects in all.

The last form of web page background effects are transitions which can be caused to act upon a single image or a complete web page.

For those of you familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint the effects are similar to the transitions it produces for slide show presentations.

Finally there are 3D Web page Backgrounds that can be created by beginners to experienced designers.  You can choose from hundreds of backgrounds, 3D objects, rendering effects, material settings, lighting and animation effects.

You can also manually adjust settings & parameters to achieve the exact effect you are looking for.
