Web Page Design - II

If your small business web page design doesn't satisfy this checklist, you won't get many visitors and 60% of those will leave in under 8 seconds.

Do the page titles, headlines and descriptions on each of your web pages grab the readers attention and are they relevant to the theme of your small web business ?

As Internet and search engine users become more savvy, they expect to find what they are looking for a lot faster.

It's a fact, confirmed by searcher research that 40% of all visitors leave a page in less than 8 seconds, which is how long the flash movie opposite lasts.

The page titles, headlines, descriptions and the first paragraph of the text on each of your pages is highly likely to be used by a search engine to describe your listing on a search result.

If this does not make interesting reading, searchers will not click on it and you won't get visitors.

Do the web pages designed for your small business contain a high percentage of original content not found on other web sites ?

The major search engines, in particular Google and Yahoo which account for over 70% of search traffic have what are known as duplicate content filters.

These filters are designed to reduce the number of pages the search engines have in their index that contain information they already have.

This means that if your business web pages contain too much content from elsewhere they may not be indexed by a search engine. If your pages are not indexed you have no chance of getting free search engine traffic.

Does the main ( home ) web page design for your small business website clearly and concisely tell your visitors right at the very beginning, what the website is about and what you are offering ?

If visitors are confused or in any doubt about what your small business website is offering, they will leave as quickly as when they arrived.

Does the design of each of your business web pages mean that they load fast when viewed in a web browser ?

Small business web page designThe initial viewable area of a web page should be fully loaded in a visitors web browser in less than 8 seconds.

This means for someone still on an Internet dial up connection your pages could have to be no more than about 45kB in size.

That means your on-page html code, plus off-page scripts, plus graphic files should add up to less than 45kB for each page.

Whilst around 60% of Internet users have broadband connections, 40% do not. That is still a sizeable chunk of visitors you can't afford to ban from your business web site because your pages take too long to download.

If your small business web page design fails to meet any of these checklist requirements it doesn't take too much imagination to accept that 60% ( or more ) of your visitors could easily be gone in under 8 seconds !
